Mazda, Australia’s number one import-only brand, retailed 5,830 new vehicles in August, claiming a record market share for August of 7.5 percent.

August 2008 is the 21st successive month of YOY market share growth for Mazda Australia, breaking the previous August high-water mark of 6.9 per cent set in 2007.

Mazda’s 54,831 retail total is 6.2 per cent up on last year, and well ahead of the market’s overall growth rate of 0.7 per cent.

“The Australian market was down 12.3 per cent compared to August last year, so there’s no denying it was a stormy month for new car sales,” said Mazda Managing Director Doug Dickson. “So, it was doubly pleasing to see that Mazda rode out the storm admirably.

“Mazda’s market share is up on last year. Mazda’s YTD total is up on last year. So it is clear consumers are evolving their buying habits to meet the times, and more and more are choosing Mazda’s range of exciting and economical new cars.

Mazda is third overall on the passenger car best-sellers’ list year-to-date, propelled by the hugely successful Mazda2 city car, Mazda3 sports compact and Mazda6 medium car, ably supported by the spirited MX-5 and scintillating RX-8 rotary sports coupe.

Mazda’s 10.0 per cent YTD share of the passenger car market puts Mazda well ahead of its main full-line import rivals.

“Our Mazda2, Mazda3 and Mazda6 are among the leaders in their respective segments because they appeal to both the hearts and minds of the canny new car consumer,” said Dickson. “These are the cars Australians really want to own and drive.”

The versatile Mazda6 sedan, hatch and wagon range claimed the top step of the import medium car dais, outselling all other imported models in August. Year-to-date Mazda6 is more than 52 per cent ahead of its nearest rival.

The stylish and economical Mazda3, Australia’s fourth most popular vehicle in August, continues to show great form by securing second position overall in the hearts and minds of Australian small car buyers with a segment market share of 15.4 per cent (up from 14.6pc in Aug ’07).

The chic, slick and affordable Mazda2 is by far the fastest growing model in the light car segment. 10,421 retails year to date are an astonishing 121 per cent up on 2007.
