Evans Takes Targa Tasmania Showroom Title to Secure Championship Win For Mazda Motorsport
Mazda Motorsport is tonight celebrating yet another Showroom win at Targa Tasmania and its first Australian Targa Championship victory after Simon Evans Mazda3 MPS crossed the finish line in Hobart more than 26 minutes ahead of his nearest rival.
On his way to securing Mazda Motorsport’s fifth consecutive Showroom title, Evans was the fastest showroom car on all but one of today’s stages as he continued to extend his lead over the competition.
This latest victory, along with recent wins at Targa High Country and Targa Wrest Point, means that Evans and co-driver wife Sue have been crowned showroom category winners in the Australian Targa Championship.
After a tough week’s racing, Evans is delighted to have won both titles. “The week has gone well for us and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Both this Targa Tasmania showroom title and the Championship win are reward for the hard work put in by the whole Mazda Motorsport team.”
The Mazda3 MPS also showed in the process that it is more than a match for more powerful and more expensive machinery by finishing an impressive sixth outright and beating the entire field in today’s second last stage.

Mazda Motorsport boss Allan Horsley is confident in the team’s ability to mount a strong challenge. “We’ve got a good mix of youth and experience with each of our drivers extremely capable behind the wheel. And with the long term forecast predicting that we’ll see some rain during Targa, this presents a great opportunity for the two-wheel Mazdas, which handle exceptionally well in the wet, to gain some time on our four-wheel-drive rivals.”

Mazda's Double Podium Delight At Targa Wrest Point 2012

Simon Evans was the dominant driver in the Showroom class, taking a six minute win in the Mazda3 MPS. After also winning last year’s Targa High Country rally, the Evans’ now have two class wins from two outings in the hot-hatch.
“We are very proud to be able to stand on the podium for Mazda again” said Evans. The Mazda3 MPS was again nothing short of a dream to drive and it is really rewarding to be a part of the Mazda Motorsport team.”

Mazda wins amongst the mountains of Victoria's Alpine Region

The second running of Targa High Country presented many challenges for the event’s 150 plus competitors who were faced with unseasonably hot weather.
But the four-time Australian Rally Champion duo were not to be deterred, rising to the challenge of Victoria’s open and flowing alpine roads spanning Mt Buller to King Valley.
